One of the silliest international incidents of 2017…Yeah, so I’m happy the Bruin ballers are back, for their sake and their families, but at what cost to the rest of us? Anyone who thinks this is free does not understand the nature of dealing with the Chinese at this level. So … President Deal-Maker Extraordinaire owes a favor to be named later, at best. And that day may never come … right.
He won’t do multilateral trade agreements, only showy, one-off transactions for the sake of gesture. Nor a climate change accord that now every other nation has signed. Yet he quickly gives up something (maybe) unclear, and predictably unpleasant, merely to hasten the (equally predictable) release of stupid shop-lifters?
Everything about Trump’s China visit (especially his overblown flattery, and how he lit up hearing theirs), and everything about the ballers’ behavior (poor judgment, thievery, disrespect to their hosts), plays into Chinese leaders’ messages to the Chinese people about America’s decline and decadence.
Wonder whether the stupid shop-lifters would have benefited from American presidential intervention were they not “student athletes” or some sort of sports gods or, in some other way, celebrities? To ask the question answers it.
Ugh. Wrong acts, and wrong messages, on multiple levels.
